W.C.G.I.P.A. - Paranormal investigations in West Georgia and East Alabama.
Haralson County, GA
was incorperated on September 26, 1856. The county was a division of Carroll, Paulding and Polk counties. The land was inhabited by Creek and Cherokee Indians. The land was purchased from them in a final treaty signed in 1827.
The county seat, first named Pierceville, it was later discovered that there was a town by that name already. The people decided on the name Buchanan, after James Buchanan. Time for a little lesson in the art of the southern language, the name around here is pronounced "Buckannon", I guess us southerners just have to be different.
Shortly after the name for the county seat was decided, the courthouse was built, it is no longer standing. The next courthouse was built in 1892 and still stands today. It is fully restored and open for tours.
The southern gold rush of Haralson County was around 1930, "Possum Snout" now known as Tallapoosa, GA, was in exsistnce as early as 1715. It is unknown exactly when this area was settled, in 1860, Tallapoosa incorperated to become a city. there were no civil war battles on the streets of Tallapoosa. The crown jewel of Tallapoosa was The Lithia Springs Hotel. It was built in 1892, a fully wooden structure as grand as it was beautiful, it was, sadly, dismantled during World War II. Tallapoosa also boasts the first free public school in the state.
Bremen, or first named "Wolf Pen", was incorperated in 1883. The city was named after Bremen, Germany, by an immigrant named Kramer. Bremen had many textile mills, most of them are closed now. Bremen is still a thriving city in Haraslon county.
There are many areas of paranormal interest in Haralson County, cemeteries date back to the late 1700's and early 1800's. There are many areas listed with outher paranormal sites, here are the major areas:
Devil's Kitchen- this area is rumored to be haunted by a teenager that was killed at the creek below Devil's Kitchen. Some say he can be seen waiting to be picked up by the people who left hin on the roadside as a prank, when he was killed. There was a murder at the kitchen. My wifes aunt, to be exact. It seems the story on other sites have been inaccurate. She was killed by her jealous boyfriend, that was married and put into a well. She was late found by a group of hunters. It is said that you can hear her screams in the woods.
Bremen High School- This area is said to be haunted by two spirits. One was a young man that was killed at a wrestling event. It has been said that you can hear him rattling the doors and the sounds of cracking noises, as if it is him replaying the injury he sustained. The second ghost is an unkown little girl. Two prominant individuals at the school were working late one evening buildiong a trophy cabinet in the second floor hallway. They noticed a small girl at the end of the hall and went to investigate only to find that she had vanished after turning the corner of the hall. This same girl was said to be seen by a teacher doing paperwork after hours. The little girl stopped in her doorway and looked in. The teacher got up to see what this small girl was doing out at that late hour, she went out the door only to find empty hallways.
Bremen City Hall- A city worker told me the story of objects being placed in areas they were not in beforehand. One example, this gentleman stated, was a coffee pot he had used earlier, washed and placed in the drain, it wa moved behind other items upon later inspection. He also tells stories of strange noises and walking sounds on the upper floor of the building..that area is vacant!
Tallapoosa- Hollywood City Cemetery has its stories, too. One in particular, was told by a gentleman, whom has passed on. He told the story of driving by the cemetery and a white figure coming up to his window. It stayed with him the entire way to his home. When he would speed the car up, the white figure would also speed up. It stayed by his window about ten munites after hisn arrival at this home before it faded away. I have investigated this cemetery and have EVP's and interesting photos from this area.
Tallapoosa- A local florist in town, located in an old home, is said to be haunted.
Tallapoosa- A local residence is said to be haunted by the grandmother of the former residents. The ghost is said to still be in that residence and visits the one next door.
Tallapoosa- The original city jail is said to be hauted by possibly three spirits. One of a slain officer and two inmates that died in the cell.
Steadman area of Tallapoosa- North of Tallapoosa at the intersection of Crossroads Church road and Steadman road, there is a home, said to be haunted by a boy and his father. the boy was killed by his father and the spirit of the boy is said to be seen in the kitchen with blood on him. Former residents aslo state that the boy would play with their daughter. The man that haunts the residence is said to carry a gun. Former residents state that their daughter ws particulary threatended by this spirit.
Steadman- Stories of "The White Thing" have been told for many years in this area. Descriptions vary but they all have one thing in common, a large white creature stalking hunters and residents has been seen in this area. Some say they have seen it hiding in the underbrush and other say that it has actually had brushes of death with vehicles traveling the dark country roads. This may be an area of study for Cryptozoologists.
There are many more sites of interest in the area, alot I have listed on this site that we have investigated. I will update this area as more stories are passed my way.
